QoLF Advocates for Caregivers

If our FSC had not advocated for this caregiver, she might still be trying to reach someone to accomplish the home modifications her wounded veteran needed.

This family of four includes the veteran, his spouse and caregiver, and their two daughters.  While serving in the Army Reserves throughout multiple deployments, the veteran stepped on an IED in Afghanistan.  He sustained multiple injuries to include right leg BK amputation, de-gloving of the left leg/limb salvage, PTSD, TBI, restricted lung disease, and much more.

His spouse and caregiver reached out to us for assistance in finding contractors for a home modification grant that the family had been awarded. She had been trying to reach her contact person at the VA for two weeks. After leaving several voicemails with no return calls, our FSC followed up with her to see if she had heard back from anyone and then searched for another means of contacting them. She found a regional office and gave the caregiver the  new contact information. When the caregiver spoke with someone at the regional office, they informed her the person she had been trying to contact had retired more than a year ago and since that time, the phone number and voicemail had no longer been in use. If our FSC had not been advocating for this caregiver, she may still be trying to get in touch with someone at VA to activate his home modification grant.

This is just one of the many ways our Family Support Coordinators assist and advocate for the caregiving families Quality of Life Foundation is honored to work with across the country.
