Resolving Unmet Needs

A caregiver reached out to us for resources to purchase a split adjustable bed for her veteran and herself. She provides care for her husband, a wounded Army veteran who has significant injuries after multiple deployments.  After understanding what the needs of the family were, our QoLF FSC teamed with Operation First Response and received a generous discount from Mattress Firm to purchase a bed that helps her veteran now sleep comfortably through the night. The caregiver expressed her excitement at finally having a resolution: “The bed was delivered on Monday. It is wonderful…I simply do not have the words to express my gratitude for your help! Thank you!”

The veteran’s mobility and stability had deteriorated to such a degree that the family needed an accessible way for him to shower. Our FSC provided her with the information and guidance she needed to apply for a HISA grant from the VA. After applying and working through the process, the caregiver received the news that they had been approved and the veteran would finally have an accessible shower in his home. As the caregiver stated in a note to her FSC: “I guess we’re off to the races! I am so excited! Thank you so much for your guidance through this!”

As many wounded veteran families know, there often is not money available after meeting monthly obligations for extras, big-ticket items, or unexpected expenses. The caregiver’s extended family member was getting married and she and her son wanted to attend. As she had also indicated she could use a bit of respite, we paid for the caregiver’s lodging, food, and miscellaneous expenses so she and her son could spend time and celebrate with their family.

Lastly, QOLF also provided a bit of holiday help in the form of our annual holiday blessing to the family.

We were honored to work with this most deserving family and appreciate all they have done for us!
